What To Do In Southern Tasmania

Convenience without the congestion! The Claremont Hotel is the ideal place to base yourself if you want to discover the wonders of Southern Tasmania.  A short 20 minute drive from Hobart’s CBD, and just off Highway 1, the Claremont Hotel is your ideal choice for a relaxing and stress free stay away from the hustle and bustle of the city.  Some of the fantastic local attractions include:

Museum of Old and New Art (MONA)

Discover what the rest of the world is talking about!  MONA opened in January 2011 and is the largest private museum in Australia, owned by local identity David Walsh.  The museum is situated just down the road from the Claremont Hotel in the grounds of the Moorilla winery.  The museum is renowned for its extensive collection of artworks – from the visually appealing to the downright confronting. The award winning attraction is a must see for locals and visitors alike.

Tattersalls Racing Complex (Elwick)

A great place to back a winner, Tattersalls Park is a thoroughbred horse racing venue located at nearby Glenorchy. Race meets have been conducted at the current site since the late 19th century, which was first leased by the TRC in 1874.  The venue was redeveloped in 2004 by the Tasmanian Government, and involved the construction of a harness track, greyhound track and the redevelopment of the heritage listed grandstand.

Derwent Entertainment Centre (DEC)

The Derwent Entertainment Centre is located just down the road in Glenorchy and hosts a raft of major events from Eisteddfods to major concerts and conferences.
